The labour activity of foreign citizens in Russia is governed by the
immigration and the labour legislation. In accordance with art. 11 of the Labour
Code the rules stipulated by the labour law shall have effect upon the
employment relations engaging foreign citizens, stateless persons, organizations
created by them or with their participation, employees of international
organisations and foreign entities, unless otherwise stipulated by the federal
law or an international treaty. This means that foreign citizens are subject to
any and all normative provisions containing the rules of the labour law, except
for the cases stipulated by the federal laws.
The state fixes a quota on a yearly basis for the processing of invitations
for entry into the country for the purposes of getting employment here. 213 000
invitations are fixed for the current year. For hiring you the Russian
organization should process a special permission for the attraction of the
foreign manpower, having preliminarily shown good reason for the special
necessity of engaging foreign specialists, and then shall assist you in
obtaining a personal work permit, valid for not more than one year and is
subject to prolongation after the expiration of such term. For obtaining a work
permit, you will need to produce a copy of your passport with the registration
at your place of stay in the Russian Federation, the certificate of
HIV-infection absence, 1 photo, and a copy of your education document.
You will be able to get a work visa only after the Russian company will
process a work permit for you. As a rule this takes about three to six months. A
working visa is only of entry type and is valid for entry within three months.
After your arrival you will get a multi-entry visa, which is valid for exit and
entry within the term of your work permit. The registration will also be
included for this term.
